MEXICAN
MISSION UPDATE:
Housing
project - Empalme, Sonora, Mexico.
April
4, 2003
First of
all, it is serious about summer here in the Sonora desert. The days are
starting to get hot and dry. My nose has already peeled (for the first
time this year), so I guess I know summer is coming.
The Sonora
house in Empalme has changed addresses. We now are headquartered at Centro
Victoria. It is a building along side a small house. It was built several
years ago in the hopes that it would be used by an evangelist group to
help educate Christian pastors. It never did reach that level. But I am
thankful for the owner, who lives in Tucson, Arizona for allowing us to
use it rent free. It is true that there is quite a bit of maintenance to
catch up on, as it had been empty for over a year before I moved in.
But it is coming along, and we have successfully hosted two work
teams here for the 2003 season already.
And are hoping to add to that number.

WORK
TEAMS WANTED
The project
here is ready and waiting for work teams.
I wish that we had the problem of trying to squeeze them into the
calendar dates still open. But
right now we are trying to get the word out, and we welcome you to bring a
youth, college, adult, family, or mixed team to Empalme to see what is
being done here.
| I am reaching out to my friends and extended church family to help me make this project a reality. |
Since the conception of this project in Dec.2001 we have come a long way. But we still have a long road ahead of us. Through the help of city officials we have a block of land within the city limits that is now divided into 34 lots. Our hope is to construct 16 duplexes and 2 single casitas by the completion of this building project. Although at the moment it is not know who all 34 families are, we do have a waiting list of 15 families ready to find a secure and safe home within these walls of cement blocks.
The
process of determining families is long and painstaking, (and sometimes
heart wrenching) involving several area offices and churches.
This truly is a community project.
Although originally initiated as a disaster relief project by UMCOR
for hurricane Juliette victims, it has become much more.
The project now involves several area churches, and familiar
friends of the project are found in varying and surprising places and
people. From city officials,
to local church members, to local volunteers with many varied skills and
talents. Unfortunately the
one time donation of funding from UMCOR has long ran out.

Would
your church mission committee, youth group, women’s club, men’s
association, or congregation be willing to organize a fundraiser or take
up a special collection to help keep this project alive?
Or could
your church support the project buy providing the cost of a roof
(approximately $600.00), or the cost of
a casita, $2700.00. Would
you be interested in buying doors or windows for the houses, or provide
the wiring for electricity?
Every penny
(pesos) that you send directly to the project here will be spent on the
construction site. There is no office fees, or administration fees.
I have family and friends that continue to support me - so all of
my personal needs are being meant at this time.
I truly feel
that with your help we can have 34 families in new homes for this year...
Will you help me make this more than a dream?
May God Bless You and open your eyes to the blessings that HE bestows upon you daily.
